Petitions and other similar requests submitted by the public, whether written or oral, are heard at the beginning of each regular meeting. Except in the case of urgency and unanimous vote of the Council members present, petitions won’t be acted upon at the time presented. After getting a petition, the Council will decide how to handle it by simple motion. They can: look at it at a future regular Council meeting; send it to another board or committee for study and report; send it to the Town Manager for investigation and report; or acknowledge information without further action. LEGISLATIVE CONTEXT*
State Statute § 160A-81.1. Public comment period during regular meetings. requires the council to provide at least one period for public comment per month at a regular meeting of the council. The council may adopt reasonable rules governing the conduct of the public comment period.
