Overview: Council will consider the Poet Laureate Selection Team’s recommendation of Cortland Gilliam for Chapel Hill Poet Laureate for the 2-year term of 2023 - 2024.

Recommendation(s): |
That the Council appoint Cortland Gilliam as the Chapel Hill Poet Laureate for 2023 - 2024.
Fiscal Impact/Resources: The Chapel Hill Poet Laureate for 2023 - 2024 will receive a total stipend of $3,000 for fulfilling the duties of the position. This stipend amount is currently included in the annual budget.

A RESOLUTION APPOINTING CORTLAND GILLIAM AS THE TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL’S POET LAUREATE FOR 2023-2024 (2022-11-16/R-6)
WHEREAS, the Town appointed C.J. Suitt to the position of Chapel Hill’s first Poet Laureate on November 20, 2019; and
WHEREAS, the first Poet Laureate's term expires December 31, 2022; and
WHEREAS, the Town wishes to continue the Poet Laureate program after the first Poet’s term expires; and
WHEREAS, the Town adopted The Chapel Hill Poet Laureate Program Guidelines on April 21, 2021; and
WHEREAS, an open application process for local poets to apply to become the next Chapel Hill Poet Laureate was held in August and September of 2022; and
WHEREAS, a Selection Team comprising a Town Council member, an Arts Commissioner, the first Poet Laureate, and Town staff conducted the Poet Laureate Selection Process in accordance with the Poet Laureate Program Guidelines; and
WHEREAS, the Selection Team recommends Cortland Gilliam be appointed Chapel Hill Poet Laureate for 2023-2024.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council appoints Cortland Gilliam as the Chapel Hill Poet Laureate for January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2024.
