memorandum

to:                     Mayor and Town Council

from:                     Justin Haslett, Cultural Arts Commission Chair

subject:                     Recommendation for the Cultural Arts Commission vacancies

date:                     June 21, 2018

Recommendation:  The Cultural Arts Commission met on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 and by a unanimous vote have made the following recommendation(s) to the Town Council for consideration:

                     Josh Rosenstein, Reappointment, Town Resident Seat

Special Request(s):

With Rosenstein's reappointment (July 1), there will be 6 filled seats on the Commission and 5 vacancies. The Commission requests that Council hold these seats vacant through September so that the Commission and Town staff can work together over the summer to recruit a diverse pool of applicants and make thoughtful and strategic recommendations to Council in the Fall.

Background:

Recommendation for Reappointment:

Josh Rosenstein's partial term is ending on June 30, 2018.  Josh has been an engaged member of the Commission, serving on several selection committees, fully participating in meetings, and offering thoughtful insight and perspective.  Contingent on his re-appointment, Josh was elected as Vice Chair at the June 30 meeting as well.  The Commission values Josh and looks forward to his continued participation on the Commission.

Special Request:

The vacancies are a result of some terms ending, some resignations because of work/life commitments, and a Commission member being elected to Council.  While there are some active applications - and those will remain active - the Commission would like to focus on building a more diverse group. Of the six filled seats, all are white and four are male.  The Commission would like to spend some time recruiting for diversity and come back to Council with a recommendation in the Fall.

Note: Communications and Public Affairs notes that the Chapel Hill Cultural Arts Commission reviewed the following applications: Taylor Gartman, Kate Kryder, Craig Longnecker, Kippy Perkins, William Rigby, Joshua Rosenstein, Sarah Sasz, and Joseph Steinfels.
