memorandum

to:                     Mayor and Town Council

from                      Robert L. Campbell, Co-Chair

subject:                     Recommendation for the vacancy(s)

date:                     June 07, 2018

Recommendation:  The Justice in Action Committee, met on June 07, 2018, and by a unanimous vote have made the following recommendation(s) to the Town Council for consideration:

Jaclyn Elaine Gilstrap, Appointment, Chapel Hill/Carrboro Planning Jurisdiction Resident

If the Council decides to vacate the seat held by Mr. Edmonds, the Committee recommends:

Dana Mangum, Appointment, Chapel Hill/Carrboro Planning Jurisdiction Resident

Special Request(s): The Committee members request a new appointment to the seat currently held by Jonathan Edmonds. Mr. Edmonds has not been in attendance at meetings and has not responded to staff about his intention of remaining on board. This would vacate a second seat and the board unanimously voted for applicant, Dana Whitfield Mangum to fill this seat.

Background: The Committee members have taken in consideration the background and the work the applicants have been engaged in with this community, as well as their views of the area and ability to bring a good foundation to the work that this Committee does for our community.

Jaclyn Gilstrap's views on social justice are in line with the mission of this Committee as well as the Town Council. Jaclyn Elaine Gilstrap will be a great addition to our board as we move forward connecting our community as we promote social justice.

Dana Whitfield Mangum brings a view that will help us to see issues that can impact our social life and has the tools that can help engage the problem before the problems impact the community. She has a view into a lens that we can use and apply to the work of social justice for this community, as we look at her for consideration as a replacement for a board member.

Note: Communications and Public Affairs notes that the Justice in Action Committee reviewed the following applications: Bilikis Akindele, Sammy Bauer, Annie Brayboy, Laura Brown, Tracy Cherpeski, Christopher Daley, Jaclyn Gilstrap, Natalie Lakas, and Dana Mangum. No additional applications were received between June 8, 2018 and the June 18, 2018 for the Justice in Action Committee.

Please note that the Board Membership Policy allows community members to serve on the Justice in Action Committee in addition to service on another board or commission.
