Overview: The proposed text amendments to the Code of Ordinances that regulate traffic control devices will allow staff greater flexibility to respond to resident concerns and implement traffic calming measures.

|
Recommendation(s): |
That the Council enact an Ordinance amending the Town Code Sections 21-8 and 21-13.
Key Issues:
• The Town’s current Code of Ordinances requires all stop signs, yield signs, and other traffic control devices to be approved by Town Council before implementation.
• Town staff have faced delays in implementing traffic calming measures because Council approval is required to relocate stop signs and yield signs. The proposed change would allow staff to provide timely responses to resident concerns relative to traffic safety.
• Peer jurisdictions such as the City of Durham have ordinances that allow staff to implement stop signs, yield signs, and traffic calming without the approval of their elected bodies.
Fiscal Impact/Resources: The proposed ordinance change does not have any known fiscal impact.
