BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT*
PFAS (known as “forever chemicals”) are showing up in nearly every aspect of managing the community’s water, including reservoirs, drinking water, wastewater, and biosolids. OWASA does not create PFAS but is responsible for managing its presence. Technology for capturing and destroying PFAS is evolving and costly. OWASA has optimized its treatment process to remove PFAS from drinking water and is piloting advanced treatment options. Regulations are forthcoming, but OWASA is taking proactive steps and partnering with researchers to address PFAS now.
