A RESOLUTION TO URGE THE NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO CLOSE THE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE GAP IN NORTH CAROLINA BY PASSING MEDICAID EXPANSION (2023-01-25/R-0.1)
WHEREAS, healthy citizens and access to affordable health care are key to our local and state economy Orange County and Chapel Hill economy; and
WHEREAS, closing the health insurance coverage gap with Medicaid Expansion would extend insurance to approximately 7,254 uninsured individuals in Orange County and close the gap for more than 600,000 across the state; and
WHEREAS, closing the health insurance coverage gap would drive $141,300,000 in new business and healthcare activity in Orange County, generate $3,724,200 in new county revenue, and create 629 new jobs; and
WHEREAS, closing the health insurance coverage gap would provide access to behavioral health care to address the opioid epidemic which, in 2019, resulted in 13 deaths and 47 emergency department visits related to opioid overdose in Orange County; and
WHEREAS, federal funding from taxes that North Carolinians have already paid will cover 90% of costs for states closing the health insurance coverage gap to citizens who need access to affordable health insurance.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council urges the North Carolina General Assembly to close the health insurance coverage gap in North Carolina by passing Medicaid Expansion.
