RECOMMENDATION: The Planning Commission met on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 and by a split vote made the following recommendation(s) to the Town Council for consideration:

 

                     John Rees, Reappointment, Transportation and Connectivity Advisory Board Champion

                     Geoffrey Green, Appointment, Town Resident

                     Elizabeth Losos, Appointment, Community Design Commission Champion

 

SPECIAL REQUEST(s): For the Community Design Commission Champion, the Planning Commission did not assign appointments to specific roles.

Note: Communications and Public Affairs notes that the Planning Commission reviewed the following applications: Alexandra Allman, Ian Bowater, Andra Ghent, Geoffrey Green, Katharine Huge, Joseph Kalo, Joshua Levenson, Elizabeth Losos, John Rees, Whit Rummel, Maria (Polly) Van De Velde, and Benjamin Williams. SUBJECT:                     Recommendation for the vacancy(s)

RECOMMENDATION: The Council Committee: Planning Commission Interviews met on Tuesday, September 22, and Thursday, October 1, 2020 and by a unanimous made vote following recommendation to the Town Council for consideration:

 

                     Elizabeth Losos, Appointment, Community Design Commission Champion

 

The Council Committee: Planning Commission Interviews met and by a 2-1 vote made following recommendation to the Town Council for consideration:

                     Geoff Green, Appointment, Chapel Hill Resident

                     John Rees, Reappointment, Transportation and Connectivity Advisory Board Champion

 

The dissenting member recommended Polly Van de Velde for the Chapel Hill Resident seat and abstained from recommending an applicant for the Transportation and Connectivity Advisory Board Champion seat.

 

SPECIAL REQUEST(s):  No Comment.

 

BACKGROUND:

Mr. Green is a 12-year Chapel Hill resident and works in City and Transportation Planning. His interests and experience in zoning, development, climate change, and racial equity issues align with Council goals and objectives.  His particular expertise in Land Use Management will help the Town as it revises and updates the Land Use Management Ordinance with an eye to improving its clarity, equity, and accessibility to meet our community’s interests. 

 

Ms. Losos’ background in international ecology and conservation work will support the Town’s interest in environmentally sustainable design and bring best practices to the discussion.  Her particular expertise in Evidence-Based and Upstream Planning will help make good policy decisions that streamline the planning process and use data driven metrics to make sound decisions.  

 

As the current chair of the Planning Commission, Mr. Rees has developed a robust understanding of the Town’s planning processes and long-term interests in the area of Transportation.   He has furthered the professional understanding of the Planning Commission members by providing educational resources and opportunities for more in-depth learning.  His meeting management style has been both efficient and compassionate to the many interests of our community members.
