memorandum
to: Mayor and Town Council
from: Volker Mueller, Acting Chair
subject: Recommendation for the Community Design Commission vacancy(s)
date: April 24, 2018
Recommendation: The Community Design Commission met on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 and by a unanimous vote have made the following two recommendations to the Town Council for consideration:
• Volker Mueller, Reappointment, Chapel Hill Resident
• Chris Berndt, Reappointment, Chapel Hill Resident
And by a 3-person vote made the following two recommendations to the Town Council for
consideration:
• Thomas Henkel, Appointment, Chapel Hill Resident
• Forrest Heath, III, Appointment, Chapel Hill Resident
Special Request(s): The Commission is seeking a person with landscape design background to help with reviews of Alternative Buffers and Special Use Permits with requests for modifications to buffers and/or tree canopy.
The seat for a resident of a historic district is open. Previously, the seat was vacant for almost two years before being filled. Staff recommends that the seat be filled in the fall in the case that there are applicants to the Historic District Commission that did not get appointed to that board and may want to consider appointment to the CDC.
Background: We have only had one person serve on the Commission that was from a historic district. The general opinion of the Commissioners is that this seat designation does not have any special relevance beyond that of a general Chapel Hill Resident seat.
Note: Communications and Public Affairs notes that the Community Design Commission reviewed the following applications: Christine Berndt, Bennett Taylor Dansby, Forrest Heath III, Thomas Henkel, and Volker Mueller.
