Overview: On October 23, 1947, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro branch of the NAACP officially convened for the first time at Hargraves Community Center. The Town of Chapel Hill values the work that the NAACP and its members have done and continue to do to fulfill the Town’s mission of learning, serving, and working together to build a community where people thrive. The Town recognizes and celebrates the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP’s 75th Diamond Anniversary in 2022. 

 

Recommendation(s):

That the Council authorizes the Town Manager to proceed with the design, manufacture, and installation of a plaque that honors the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP Founding Day.

 

Fiscal Impact/Resources: Costs to manufacture and install the plaque are to be determined.

A RESOLUTION RECOMMENDING INSTALLATION OF PLAQUE HONORING CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO NAACP FOUNDER’S DAY AT HARGRAVES COMMUNITY CENTER (2022-09-14/R-6)

 

WHEREAS, on October 23, 1947, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro branch of the NAACP officially convened for the first time at Hargraves Community Center; and

 

WHEREAS, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP has advocated for a more just Chapel Hill since its founding, including advocating for police reform, advancing educational opportunities, registering voters, pushing for civil rights and fairer labor and housing conditions, and creating opportunities for fellowship and community; and

 

WHEREAS, the NAACP worked with the Vickers family to force the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools to desegregate in the early 1960s; and

 

WHEREAS, noted Civil Rights lawyer and activist Floyd McKissick had the Chapel Hill Nine students sign up as NAACP members so that the organization could provide them legal representation; and

 

WHEREAS, the NAACP helped lead the charge to rename Airport Road for Martin Luther King, Jr. and to install a state historical marker remembering the Journey of Reconciliation; and 

 

WHEREAS, through these important efforts and countless others in the community, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP remains committed to ensuring the political, educational, social, and economic equality rights of all people; and

 

WHEREAS, the Town of Chapel Hill deeply values the work that the NAACP and its members continue to do to fulfill the Town’s mission of learning, serving and working together to build a community where people thrive; and

 

WHEREAS, the Town of Chapel Hill recognizes and celebrates the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP’s 75th Diamond Anniversary in 2022; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council Naming Committee recommends honoring the foundation of the local branch of the NAACP by installing a plaque at the site of the first branch meeting, Hargraves Community Center.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council authorizes the Town Manager to proceed with the design, manufacture, and installation of a plaque that honors the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP Founding Day.
